Ashley
15-year-old Ashley Salk sat in the back seat of her parents, Kate and Scotty Salk's new Pontiac convertible. This was her "punishment" as she called it for not being invited to one of her parents’ celebrity parties. She could surf the web, or IM her friends... no scratch that. Her acquaintances, as she called them. They were only her friends because they wanted to meet her famous parents. Ashley could listen to her iPod, but that got boring fast, especially since most of the songs were her fathers (because they were free), not that they were in a money situation. She could order a pizza, but she doubted that they delivered to cars, and her parents would of course bring her home some fillet mignon or caviar leftovers, forgetting that she was a vegetarian. "Honey, no one in Hollywood is a vegetarian." her mom would constantly tell her whenever she was shopping. Ashley was doomed to boredom. She had just turned on the computer when her phone rang. Ashley picked it up.
"Hello?" she asked into the pink mouthpiece.
"Hiiiiiii! OMG! I HAVE THE MOST EXCITING NEWS!" Great, it was one of her most annoying acquaintances, Barbara who asked everyone to call her "Barbie".
"Cool it Barbara, sheesh, you have, like, the loudest voice ever."
"Well, like, sorry. But guess what I was just asked out by Jack Fuller!!!! How totally awesome is that?" Barbara said.
"I am ecstatic with joy, that is soooo awesome." Barbie didn't quite catch the sarcasm in her voice. Ashley secretly had a major crush on the popular hottie, Jack but hadn't told anyone.
"I know, like, totally."
"Well what did you say?" Ashley asked.
"No of course!" Barbie answered.
"Oh, the hard to get approach. I see your plan." Barbie giggled.
"Well I have to go now, stuff to do, ya know? Homework?" Ashley always got uncomfortable with her parent’s fan club.
"Oh, I totally get ya'. Is your mom their? I want to ask her something.” Barbie asked politely.
"Uhhhh.........I dunno. I don't usually let parents use my phone. Sorry. Bye." Ashley said this quickly before hanging up.
Soooooo. Ashley now had a problem. She had sworn to herself that she would get a boyfriend by the end of this month but so far her plan had failed. Then her cell rang again. Ugh, what was up with that?
"Hello?” she asked, sounding fairly exasperated.
"Hey, was sup". It was Dylan. Dylan was a boy Ashley had known since the day she was born. He lived near the city and her parents were great friends with them. Another thing about Dylan was he had been practically stalking her and had been trying to figure out ways to capture her attention since he was 9.
"How do you know my cell number?” Ashley asked.
"How did you know it was me?" Dylan slurred into phone. Ew, thought Ashley.
"Repeating. How do you know my number?" Ashley asked.
"You're mom gave it to me", Dylan said, he sounded pleased with himself and laughed softly. Double Ew. Now he knew her phone number and had talked with her mom. Oh god, thought Ashley, she’s gonna ask me why I don’t talk to Dylan anymore.
"I am going to kill her." whispered Ashley softly.
"What was that", asked Dylan.
"Nothing", she said quickly. Silence. "Why are you calling me?" Ashley asked. She paid no attention to her rudeness and neither did Dylan. Fact was, he was used to it.
"I was wondering if you wanted to see a movie at the theatre?” he posed it as a question. That was it! Ashley hung up. Triple ew. Dylan wasn't ugly but he wasn't prince charming either. He had a big-ish nose, dark brown curly hair, and glasses. Jack Fuller, on the other hand had a perfect nose, he also had sort of longish hair that fell into his eyes, super mega hot face, played sports and was tall.
Ashley wasn't bad looking; she had brown hair with high lights, plucked eyebrows, naturally red lips and deep blue eyes. Why did she not have a boyfriend? Ashley was not, in fact a social butterfly, she didn't talk to boys or if she did it was to criticize them. Her acquaintances made her over rated and most boys that had liked her only liked her for about an hour. Usually they would figure that there was really no hope. Ashley knew this but hated change and therefore found it hard to change herself. Ashley looked at her digital watch. 8:45 PM it said. Ashley really wanted to get out of the car and she didn't know how much more air it could hold. She picked up her phone and dialed her mom. After about 3 rings it picked up.
"Hello?" Said Katie Salk's familiar voice.
"Mom... it's me..." Ashley said
"Oh, hello, Andreas!"
"My name isn't Andreas." Ashley knew she couldn't be heard. Her mother had covered the mouthpiece and was telling everyone about her plastic surgeon. Ashley was not as important as him, because the same thing happened with all celebrities’ children, when they're born it's a fad. No one cares after that.
"Mom," Ashley said, when her mother uncovered the mouthpiece. "How long is this party going to be?"
"How about 8:00 tomorrow?" Ashley knew her mom was under, probably 2 or more hours off. She would probably be out by 10 AM the next day.
"Okay, I'm going shopping." Ashley knew her mom would have objected, had she not told her friends that the person on the phone was 'Andreas'. Ashley hung up and unlocked her side door. She stepped out into the cool fall evening and started walking towards the nearest mall. She walked slowly watching her feet. All of a sudden she bumped into someone.
"Hey! Ashley, right?" Ashley looked up. IT WAS JACK!!! The Jack Fuller!
"Ummmm... ya that’s right, Ashley," she said sheepishly.
"Hey I just asked your friend out, Barbie," he said plainly. "I hate it when girls play hard-to-get, I mean if you like someone then go out with them its not like you have to play games-" he paused "I'm sorry, I'm rambling aren't I?"
"Yeah kind of," said Ashley. Stupid, stupid, stupid, thought Ashley, such beautiful lips couldn't ramble!
" Well that is Jack Fuller for you; explaining himself to strangers- not that you're a stranger- you know what I mean right?" Ashley nodded; she still wasn't over the fact that he was actually talking to her.
" Well I gotta go, maybe I will see you around sometime?" Jack winked at Ashley, and walked away. Ashley just stood there, mouth wide open. Whoa, she thought to her self. After a few seconds, she awoke from her daze. She walked quickly through the night air, swinging a black Gucci purse over her shoulder and begining to count the credit cards in her wallet. She wanted to buy some new skinny boots and another sweater but she also wanted some new gold hoop earrings. (Barbie had "borrowed" them and never given them back.)
Ashley turned the corner and was immediately blinded by the white lights of Leonadas Shopping Center. Ashley came to this mall so often that the people actually knew her! She began to walk towards Malo Bootery on the east end of the shopping center. Ashley's mom HATED this particular bootery and that was exactly why Ashley loved buying her shoes from there.
A little bell chimed as she pushed open the large glass doors and entered the gardenia-smelling store.
"Hey, Diva!” Ginny called from the front desk. The store was packed as usual and the walls were covered with every kind of shoe and customer.
"Hey, Ginny." said Ashley pushing a strand of hair out of her eyes.
"So, you haven’t seen you for a while, what's going on?"
"Oh, nothing. Well...the usual basically. My parents still ignore me, my crush barely knows I'm alive, and my acquaintances are just plain annoying. How about you?" Ginny, the owner of the store was the closest thing Ashley ever had to a real friend. She felt like she could tell her things she couldn't even tell her own mother and DEFINETELY not Barbie, unless she wanted her whole school to know about it within seconds.
"The store has been really busy lately. We’re getting a lot of business. But of course, nothings the same without you, amiga." Ashley smiled and started wandering through the aisles not entirely thinking about boots, but more about Jack and Barbie. She could imagine them walking down the street together, sucking each other’s faces every 2 seconds. What was wrong with today’s societies? Why is it that, if Ashley has to talk to her parents, she has to go through their secretaries first? Why her?
Just as Ashley was rounding aisle three, a finger tapped her on the shoulder and she whipped around. She was filled with extreme horror at what was standing just behind her. It was the all-evil Dylan.
"All of a sudden I feel veeeerrrry sick," she said slowly.
"Hey," Dylan said trying to suppress the grin creeping across his face.
"How did you know I was here?" Ashley asked as she crossed her arms in dislike.
"The devil works in mysterious ways," Dylan said. “I said I wanted to go to a movie, but when you said no, I thought I’d drown my sorrows in… um… shoes…?” He reached and tried to pinch her cheek but Ashley dodged him.
"Get away! Creep!" Ashley squealed and she pulled a random pair of winter boots off the shelf and carried them over to a counter. Dylan followed, his hands over his hips. He would actually look stylish, Ashley thought, if I forgot all about him STALKING me. Ashley groaned, what a nightmare!
"C'mon Ash, lets get some ice cream!"
"You are too lame too be true," Ashley said. "Now get away from me before I do something I will not regret." Dylan backed off and turned to the door. Ashley had a terrible temper and was a skilled kicker, especially around delicate areas. Dylan should've known, he had felt "the kick" twice.
The door jingled merrily as Dylan closed it and ran off into the cool night air. Ashley breathed a breath of relief and tried on the brown pom- pommy winter boots she was holding. They fit perfectly and Ashley quickly bought them. As she walked out of the bootery she smiled down at her new shoes and clacked them together as if she were on a runway. Ashley walked by the movie theater and scanned the flashing sign for any good movies. Antics, Headlights, Fever and High Drama were playing. Headlights and Antics were movies her parents had made about a year ago. Those   were definitely out. Ashley thought for a moment and then went to buy tickets for High Drama. Apparently the movie was about some perfect teenager and her pathetic problems, a movie that Ashley might relate to.
Ashley thanked "Carrie" the, ticket lady and hurried into the theater to get a good seat. She hurried toward the back of the theater and sat down. No one really ever bothered Ashley when she sat in the back row; only a couple people sat back there that night, a couple in their 30s with a small daughter, three guys who appeared to be brothers, and an older girl chatting with a younger boy. Ashley took a seat. The lights began to dim and Ashley was just getting comfortable, when a group of squealing and chaotic girls ran into the theater. She didn't recognize their voices at first until they ran up some stairs and were sitting, 2 rows in front of her.
"OMG, I cannot believe we made it to the theater in time."
"I totally agree", said another voice. The giggling girls, a snotty clique at Ashley's school, turned around and faced Ashley. They wore tight shirts and made out in tents during rainstorms (with boys).
"Like, do you wanna come to the beach with us after the movie?" asked Shannon.
"Uh, sure..." said Ashley, surprised but pleased at the invitation, although she didn’t know if she’d actually go in the water, seeing how cold it was. "What beach?"
"Canus Street," Shannon replied.
"Okay, I'll run home and get my swimsuit after the movie," said Ashley.
"That's okay, you won't need a swimsuit today," said Shannon. After the movie, Ashley and the clique walked to the public beach on Canus Street. It was closed, but they ducked under the sign and entered. A group of boys was already waist-high in the water, Jack Fuller and Dylan among them. Their hot bare chests gleamed in the setting sun.
The clique took off their shoes and socks; Ashley did the same. Then Rosie took off her shirt and pants, standing on the beach in her underwear.
"What are you doing?!" Ashley asked.
"Like, isn't it obvious?" said Rosie. "We're going skinny dipping."
Suddenly Ashley woke up and realized she had been sleeping. Ashley looked around and actually saw "the Clique". She noticed that Rosie, had gotten a new pair of ugly pink sneakers, and Shannon was wearing a shirt so tight, she seemed to be suffocating.
"OMG, OMG, OMG!!" they giggled. "I can't believe we're here!"
"Guess what?" said Liz, another Clique member.
"What?" They chorused.
"Dylan's coming!!!" Liz practically screamed.
"OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" resounded through the theater. The lights dimmed, and "the Clique" sat down 3 rows in front of Ashley.
Dylan walked in and sat right between Rosie and Shannon. As soon as the film began, he and Rosie started smooching, slobbering all over each other's faces. Suddenly, Dylan turned around and looked Ashley right in the eye.
"Ashley? Is that you?"
"U-uh, y-y-yeah. Dylan what are you doing here...with them?"
"Why do you care?"
"Well, it's just, that you...well, you're not really the type for girls like them to hang out with…"
"Did you just insult me?"
"Um, I-"
"Ashley, there's no reason for you to go and insult me in front of my friends just because you're jealous."
"Friends?! Jealous?! Dylan what is wrong with you? Have you been like smoking something illegal because if you are I would be happy to get you an intervention and figure what's going on with you."
"Like, Dylan, like, stop talking to this loser. Just like turn around and like watch the movie." said Rosie shooting an ugly glance towards Ashley.
"Sorry Rosie." said Dylan turning back around.
Ashley slumped down in her seat. The truth was, she really was jealous. How could Dylan, the king of all dorks, be more popular than her? She took the sleeve of her sweater and wiped her face as a tear rolled down her cheek.

The movie credits slid onto the screen, releasing her from the awkward seating situation with her ex-stalker.   She got up and sulked out of the theatre reminiscing her skinny dipping dream. On her way out she saw Barbie franticly running in and out of stores each time coming out with a new shopping bag. She headed toward the mall door trying as hard as possible not to run in to Barbie.
"OOOMMMMGGGGGGGG!   I didn't know I would find you here, Ashley!"
"Hi Barbie." said Ashley looking down at her shoes.
"Remember the little conversation we had earlier?"
"How could I forget?" Barbie didn't see Ashley roll her eyes.
"Well, remember when I told you that Jack Fuller asked me out?"
"Yes." Ashley sighed.
"Remember when I said that I said no?" Ashley didn't even bother answering this time.
"Remember when you said-."
"Barbie, just get to the point!!!" Ashley yelled.
"Jeez, your so temperamental. Well anyway, I decided that playing hard to get wasn’t the way to go so I called him back and said yes!" she said smiling wildly. Ashley felt her heart snap in 2 but she tried not to show it.
"Good for you. Listen, I got to go. Bye." Ashley turned around and pushed her self through the big sliding glass doors before Barbie could say anything else.
Could this day get any worse? Ashley thought to herself. And just then she heard a loud crack of thunder. Shit.
Ashley felt along the back of her sweater. Oh great, no hood. Ashley tightened her grip on her purse just as a fat raindrop splashed onto her nose. She took a deep breath and started on a jog toward the car. But her jog quickly turned into a run as the sky darkened and rain poured down. By the time she got to the parking lot, she was drenched all the way to her skin and deeply regretted wearing a white shirt that day. She looked around and realized with a shock that her car wasn't there. She glanced at her watch. Only 11:36, her parents wouldn't have left by now... she stepped under the rim of the roof at the restaurant. The lights were dark. Then it hit her. They closed the store. This usually didn't happen to celebrities; restaurants LOVED drunken celebrities, and what pictures of them could sell for!! Ashley knocked at the door. A man was sweeping and he opened the door a crack.
"We're closed!" He said as he tried to slam the door. Ashley stuck her foot out, though.
"My mom and dad were here, Kate and Scott Salk... do you know where they went?" Ashley made her perfect face into a pout. The man didn't buy it.
"They went to some club. Beat it." Ashley stepped out of the door and walked towards the road. The rain had slowed. Ashley opened her cell phone but suddenly it blacked out. No battery whatsoever. Thanks Barbie.
Ashley started to bite her nails. What was she going to do? She was starting to get cold from the wet. Just as Ashley was thinking about walking home she saw a dark red station wagon heading towards her from down the block. There was only one person she knew who owned a car that crappy. Dylan. Ashley took a deep breath. Was she really that desperate? She tapped her foot. The car was now just a few yards away. Ashley stepped onto the curb and waved her hand in the air. The station wagon slowed to a stop in front of her and the passenger window rolled down.
"I’m sorry, I have a policy not to give out money to hobos." Dylan smirked. Ashley did her best not to insult him.
"Dylan I-I...I need a ride home." Dylan smiled, and opened the passenger door to the car. Ashley was surprised at how clean the interior was. She sat down.
"Sorry to get your car wet..." She couldn't stand him when he was actually nice.
"It's ok. I can see through your t-shirt this way." Ashley crossed her arms in front of her.
"Pervert!" She yelped, but he laughed.
"Soooo, where's your house?"
"You know where it is, you stalker." She glared at him.
“Hey, you wanna walk home?" She shook her head, as the rain pounded the thin roof. "Then quit with the name calling."
The rest of the ride went without interruption. As they pulled up to the gates of Ashley’s mansion, Ashley realized they were locked, and her parents weren’t home yet. Yup, definitely out partying, she thought.
“Hey, how do we get in?” Dylan asked looking over his shoulder.
“No way.” She smiled, surprising herself. “You don’t get THAT info. I will run out and unlock the gates.”
“Don’t get too wet.” Dylan called out the window as she went opened her door and walked up to the padlock on her gates. She typed in her birthday, 111791, and the padlocked opened. She pulled the gates open and Dylan drove through. Then, she pushed a button on the inside of them and rushed back into Dylan’s crappy but warm car. He drove the half-mile path, up to the mansion.
“Swe-et pad ya got yourself here.” He whistled as he pulled in front of the door.
“Wait until you see my bedroom.” She grimaced.
“Is that an invitation?” He lifted on of his dark eyebrows.
“No!” Ashley shook her head. She turned to open the door and get out, when it locked.
“Wait, don’t I get something for driving you up here?” He looked at her with a puppy-dog expression.
“Hey, this isn’t turning into a kidnapping, is it?” Ashley managed to take most of the edge out of her voice, but a bit remained, forcing her voice a little higher then normal.
“No, I doubt your parent would notice you before I was done with you.”
“You got that right.” Ashley sighed. “Okay, what do you want? The new ‘Devil Q’ movie?” She referred to her one of her father’s movies.
“You have that already?!” Ashley nodded in response. “Well, it would be nice… but I was thinking something a little different… Can I at least come in and dry off?”
“Sure.” Dylan unlocked the doors, took the keys out of the ignition, and Ashley led up the granite steps to her huge maple front door. Ashley typed her birthday into the door as well, and it opened.
“Wowee. It’s HUGE!” Dylan’s shout echoed off the walls of the immense parlor.
“C’mon, it’s warmer up in my room.” Ashley gestured for him to follow her. She walked out of the parlor and past an immense marble staircase.
“Wait… these are the stairs, Ashley…”
“Don’t you want to take the elevator?” Ashley led him to the hotel-sized elevator and smiled.
“Awesome…” Dylan was awed. The elevator almost immediately dinged and Ashley and Dylan stepped in onto the very eclectic shag carpeting. The elevator went up to the fourth floor. As they stepped out, Ashley turned around once.
“Welcome to my… er,‘pad’…” She went and flopped down on her king sized canopy bed.
“This whole floor is your room?!?” Dylan’s eyes opened wider. “My room is about the size of your bed!” Ashley couldn’t help but giggle. She sat up and patted for Dylan to sit next to her.
“So, what is it you want from me, Dylan?” She tilted her head sideways, scrutinizing him, as he sat down and then leaned back onto his palms.
“This…” he whispered, and took Ashley’s chin into his hands and pressed his lips onto hers. Here eyes opened in terror at first, but she immediately closed them because it made her dizzy. His hand went to the back of her head as he pushed his face harder into hers. Ashley, realizing she was enjoying it, lifted her arms off the bed and put them on his neck. He took the hand that was holding him up on the bed and put it on the small of her back. He, of course fell on top of her. She was about to object, when this sudden pleasure came over her and she couldn’t describe it. He straightened himself better on top of her, and took his arms off her and set his chin on top of them.
“You need to drive me around more!” Was all that Ashley could say. Dylan laughed.

The next day meant school for Ashley. Not that her parents bothered to take her, they were usually hung-over. Ashley got a ride from Barbie.
"I heard you and Dylan are secretly going out!" Barbie whispered loudly as Ashley sat down in the dark blue VW.
"Who said THAT?" Ashley tried not to sound alarmed. After all, she didn't know if she and Dylan were officially boyfriend and girlfriend, or if they were dating, despite the fact he had stayed at her house for 2 more hours after dropping her off.
"Well," Barbie said, factually."Brittany said that Christina said that she heard Rosie complaining because Dylan couldn't come over because he was driving you home, but then he didn't call her for like 3 hours!"
"So...?" Ashley pried.
"SO, did he drive you home???" Barbie's eyes practically popped out of her head.
"Yes, it was raining and my parents left the restaurant and went to a club."
"AND...?"
"And what?"
"Did he ask you out?"
"Barbie, every time Dylan SEES me, he asks me out!"
"Well, did you except?"
"No!"
"Well, she said he didn't call her for 3 hours! Did anything HAPPEN???"
2 hours, thought Ashley, and yes, yes, YES it did!!! "No." She lied.
"Oh, well, I'll tell Brittany..."
The rest of the car ride passed in silence.

When Ashely got to school, she stepped out of the car to find dozens of pairs of eyes staring her down.
Whispers followed her down the hall. At first she didn't think anything of it; she was used to people talking about her, after all, her parents were famous.
But when she ran into Dylan in the hall laughing with a couple of his friends, she started to worry.
"Hey Dylan! Can I talk to you for a minute."
"Sure, baby." She glared at him, but they walked off to the side of the hall next a water fountain.
"Have you been telling people about...the other day?"
"What happened the other day?"
"Um, hello?"
"What are you talking about, Miss Ashley Salk?" People were starting to look at them.
"YESTERDAY... y'know... you drove me home???"
"Why would anyone care if i drove you home?"
"I thought at least you would! You have been stalking me for MONTHS, I thought the worst you could do was LIE about making out with me, but LYING about not? This is MUCH worse!" She yelled. More people began to stop and look at them.
"Chill, kid. I am WAY out of your range. You can tell all your little friends whatever lies you want, but there is no way in HELL i ever got anywhere NEAR kissing you." With that he walked away. Ashley's face fell. She had the strange feeling that Dylan was better then her, again. She spent the rest looking down at her feet.
When she was walking home, she heard a car stop next to her. she turned to look and found Dylan looking out at her.
"Need a ride?" he said casually.
"No." she answered and turned to walk away.
"Come on you can't be that mad at me!"
"I can't believe you! You know very well that you were at my house for 2 hours!!"
"Ok, ok, calm down" he got out of the car and walked over to her. "I'm sorry ok? I know what we did, I just don't want my other 'girlfriend' to know. I really really like you. And I'm going to break up with her. Just let the rumors settle."
She stared at him incredulously. She didn't know what to say, but he talked before she did.
"Now can i drive you home?"
"Okay..." She answered. Ashley got in the car. They talked all the way to her house and she found herself saying things she hadn't ever told anyone.
When she got home, he walked her to the door.
"Do you want to come in?" She asked, not sure what she wanted him to say.
"No, that's ok, I need to get home. Bye" he said and leaned in to give her a kiss. They finally broke apart. "Better get home" he said with a little smile on his face. Ashley noticed how cool he looked with that sideways smile.
"Sure." She answered, still dazed. As she watched him go, she decided she would have liked him to stay.
